Cabela's claims it is the "World's Foremost Outfitter" for hunting, fishing and outdoor gear. After crawling through their website, I think they are right.
And, they may want to lay claim to the "best outfitter" Web Site as well!
Cabela's stores and catalogs have always been innovative and customer focused. Well, their Web Site is no different. It is fun to look at what they offer and how they make the experience more rewarding.
This site should be a favorite for every gun owner and outdoorsman!

Cabelas is not your typical on-line catalog. It is an innovative web site that is a joy to explore. Navigation is simple; but, more important, little goodies are sprinkled throughout that make you wonder why others haven't copied the Cabelas lead.
For example, if you want to browse black powder guns (traditional or modern), Cabelas provides comparison charts that make your browsing much more informative and truly helps the buying decision go faster,
Customer service is over the top: email, phone, Q+A sections and live chat --online--to get fast answers to questions. It is clear that customers are Cabela's focus, as it always has been in their stores and catalogs.

Content Evaluation

Most outdoors folks have always given Cabelas high marks for offering quality goods for a fair price with outstanding customer service. Their Web Site simply follows the lead of their stores and catalogs. And, the way that they are expanding their online business is awesome.
They are now offering outdoor hunting trips, outdoor adventures (how about an African safari?), hunting land for sale or lease as well as guns and accessories galore. You can order up to 11 different catalogs!
While you are there, check out their "gun library". They have an incredible number of guns -- many high end collectables as well as modern inventory -- shotguns, rifles, handguns, antiques, etc. -- the list goes on.
Finally, don't forget to check out their specials and the famous "bargain cave" where you might get the deal you have been looking for.
Enough of this review -- I think I'll go catch one of their videos ("field clips"), or maybe join the fun on one of their numerous message boards, or view a few more fine pics in their Trophy Gallery.

Cabela's IPO (Initial Public Offering)

As an update to our original review, I decided to see what the site has to say about the company going public. It is scheduled to raise money through an IPO the week of June 20. 2004.
Unfortunately, the Cabelas web site has not been updated as of June 22 to acknowledge their new status. They are still touting the outfitter as a private, family run business!
Given their web expertise and dedication to customer service, I expect that to change quickly. I recommend that they go look at Gander Mountain's website (see Hunter Buzz review), to see what a good "investor relations" section might include. After all, investor service is the same as customer service, one of Cabela's strengths!
In any event, good luck Cabela's on your entry into the world of publicly held companies!
LATEST INFO (December, 2004): Cabela's now has a comprehensive section on investor relations which appears packed with the right information for evaluating their market performance! I expected this to happen given Cabela's dedication to customer AND investor service.
