Gander Mountain is a retail store chain currently located in Midwestern and Eastern states with plans to expand. They sell hunting and fishing gear, outdoors apparel, firearms and knives, camping gear, etc. The Gander Mountain Web Site is attractive, simple to use and unique in what it attempts to do!
Unlike the usual on-line retailer, Gander Mountain wants you to visit their stores. They do not have an on-line catalog. You can’t buy on-line. What you can do is to browse through their advertised and in-store specials. You can get directions to their nearest store. The one exception is gunsmithing, which is detailed on-line, and where you are given instructions on mailing in a firearm for servicing. They are an authorized service center for Weatherby, Remington, Browning, Winchester, Ithica and Verona Shotguns
You can also sign up for an email service that will highlight specials or scheduled events in the location(s) where you shop.
Gander Mountain has a different idea on how to use the web and has done an excellent job of implementing that idea.

The Gander Mountain web site is simple to use. Whether you are an investor, a fan of their TV show (We Live Outdoors), or looking for a sweet firearm deal, the navigation is easy to understand, the site is fast and the product offers to the point.
I was especially amused by the “contact us” section where they started out with two clear messages – please do not ask customer service for donations (with appropriate instructions on who to ask)….and, please do not ask for a catalog, there isn’t one. If more websites started with the answers to common questions it would save everyone valuable time. I also have personal experience with Gander Mountain customer service responding to an inquiry that I made regarding Verona shotguns (see the Firearm Buzz review of Verona shotguns). They were sharp in their response, timely and with the right information!
The investor relations section not only provides important market information but allows investors to look at trends, examine management reports and generally provides most of what an investor is looking for (short of detailed SEC required reports).
One design item worth mentioning is that Gander Mountain asks you to select the store you most frequently visit and remembers that fact. From then on, when you visit the site it tailors results for your store, not one that is located three states away!
Some of the Web Site navigation requires you to drill down to find out what is there. But, that’s designed so that you look at the specials first, then examine other bits and pieces of information that you are looking for. Like any good retailer, they have set up their website so that you browse for product while you walk through the aisles!
All in all, an excellent and well-constructed web site. Highly recommended by Firearm Buzz!

Content Evaluation

As a hook for getting you to visit their retail locations, the product special descriptions are crisp and to the point. However, I wish they had a little more info on what they stock in different departments, perhaps a listing of major brands that are carried -- for example, do they sell Verona shotguns as well as service them?
Everything looks complete and up-to-date. I didn’t spot any special offers that were past their end-date. All sections are up and running with what appears to be the latest information.
I liked the section on their TV show – We Live Outdoors. It provides a brief summary of past and future episodes so that you can plan on viewing what meets your outdoor fancy.
And, as I mentioned earlier, the investor relations section is packed with information – once again, up-to-date and crisply presented.
This is a professional website that provides clear and relevant information. They even have some cool wallpaper downloads like the picture to the right.
